User report Deutsche Technoplast GmbH: Investment for Heun EDM drilling machine type MD-740 CNC pays off for Deutsche Technoplast GmbH.
It is an ambitious aim to achieve higher productivity by shorter processing time in metal machining. But to achieve 400 percent increase in the matter of EDM drilling is an almost astronomical rate. This rate also indicates at the same time where real savings are possible for tool and mould making. The investment for the machine MD-740 with electrode changer from Heun, has set new standards for the company Deutsche Technoplast GmbH located in Wörth / Donau.
The medium-sized company for polymer processing produces high-precision components for optoelectronics- and automotive industry with more than 120 employees in the Bavarian city Wörth. They trust on their in-house tool-making for manufacture of injection moulds in high precision. „The μ is the essential measuring unit for the whole company, particularly for the manufacture of the injection moulds made of tempered steel“, comments Hans Jürgen Bauer, managing partner as well as responsible as foreman for plastics and metal for the complete metalworking: „Our precision work, both in metal-cutting as well as in non-cutting production line, is our important advantage in competition, beyond the pure cost.“ Milling, drilling, grinding, wire cutting and die sinking are already included within the business activities for a long time. The enterprise exists for 40 years now and is part of the family of corporations named Deutsche Technoplast, with further places of business in Schwabach and Malacca/Malaysia.
For drilling of start holes with diameter of only 0.15 to 3.0 mm for subsequent wire-cutting of very small cavities for injection moulds, the company only could rely on a considerably inefficient drilling unit, which was attached to a sinking EDM machine, until beginning of 2009. Larger orders – at one single work piece partly 160 holes have to be drilled by Deutsche Technoplast – where farmed out, even though this caused an enormous delay.
The readiness to invest within this field and the interest to keep the know how in-house was obvious for the management board as well as for the manager of non-cutting production line Martin Hornauer: „Our first defined target was to be able to produce smallest drillings with highest positioning accuracy and an electrode of 0.1 mm diameter by middle of 2008. A CNC equipment with electrode changer for automatic production of drillings, starting with an electrode diameter of 0.3 mm, was also of importance for us.“ After searching for a long time and procurement by Och GmbH, we found all required advantages combined in the EDM drilling machine type MD-740 of Heun Werkzeugmaschinen & Industriebedarf GmbH located in Kahl / Main. After a test period on-site Martin Hornauer could confirm as follows: The machine type MD-740 provides everything, which is required by Deutsche Technoplast. The easy handling on the one side as well as very small drillings of 0.15 to 0.3 mm diameter inserted with high precision, on the other side, meet the quality standards of the company. Time-consuming manual post processing and downtime of the machine are avoided. „Furthermore deformation due to hardening is eliminated, because drilling can be inserted after hardening of the work piece. Moreover the wear rate of the electrodes is very little“, is stated by Hornauer. Department manager and general management of Technoplast agree, that the essential advantages besides of handling are the enormous reduction of processing time as well as the increase in flexibility of internal processes for metal working. In spite of the costs of purchase of about 80.000 Euro the investment for the machine MD-740 has paid off within one year. Also service for replacement parts as well as for wear and spare parts is excellent – thus giving a further argument for a quality product „Made in Germany“, was additionally stated by Martin Hornauer.
Deutsche Technoplast GmbH – data and facts
- 1965 founded as individual enterprise by Johann Bauer, located in east Bavarian
city Wörth a.d. Donau since 1968
- specialist in polymer processing with its own construction and tool- and mould
making (grinding, turning, milling, eroding)
- specialized on machining of SMT-carrier tape (Reel-to-Reel) amongst others for LED
housings since end of the 1980
- 1992/93 foundation of production plant in Malacca/Malaysia
- 2006 take-over of company management by second generation by: Dipl.-Ing. Birgit Bauer-
Groitl and foreman Hans Jürgen Bauer
- 2009 foundation of W&L Deutsche Technoplast Automotive GmbH in Schwabach as
continuation of a old-established mould making and injection mould company
- today more than 220 employees at the three locations of the enterprise family in Wörth
a.d Donau, Schwabach and Malacca/Malaysia

Martin Hornauer (left) department manager of non-cutting production at Deutschen Technoplast, assured himself during test series at machine manufacturer Heun, that the EDM drilling machine type MD-740 will meet the required quality standards. Also skilled worker Stefan Büchele (middle) has learned to appreciate the easy and time-saving operation with PC controller and electrode changer. Erwin Hausladen, regional sales manager of Och GmbH (right), has accompanied the process of investment of Deutsche Technoplast GmbH right from the start.
Martin Hornauer: „The power spectrum of the machine type MD-740 meets our requirements. There was excellent cooperation with Heun GmbH from the beginning. Also delivery of wear and spare parts as well as of replacement parts is perfect. Erwin Hausladen always gave us good advice and support.“
The machine type MD-740 is able to manufacture drillings automatically with a diameter of 0.15 to 3.0 mm, starting with an electrode of 0.1 mm, with highest positioning precision as well as with automatic electrode changer. Because of these advantages Deutsche Technoplast achieves increase in speed for drilling of start holes for subsequent wire-cutting of about 400 percent, compared to former procedural method.
Foreman Hans Jürgen Bauer and his sister Dipl.-Ing. Birgit Bauer-Groitl successfully manage the business in second generation since 2006. The company Deutsche Technoplast GmbH exists for 40 years now, located in east Bavarian city Wörth a.d. Donau. Hans Jürgen Bauer: „To achieve shorter processing time as well as more flexibility and at the same time keep the know-how in-house, was the main argument for investment in machine MD-740.“
Deutsche Technoplast manufactures about 5 billions high-precision components per year for international customers of optoelectronics and automotive industry at their sites located in Wörth and Malacca/Malaysia. Amongst others are SMT-LED-housings in Reel-to-reel-carrier tape processing. Precision tool making and polymer processing smoothly co-operate.
